Contact Forms & Lead Capture

A contact form lets visitors send you a message, ask a question, or join your mailing list without you publishing your email address. Here is how to add one and where submissions go.

Add a contact form

  1. Open your site in the Kite editor, or ask in Slack.
  2. Ask Kite in plain language, for example, "Add a contact form with name, email, and message fields to the Contact page," or "Add a newsletter signup with just an email field to the footer."
  3. Review the form Kite adds and adjust the fields if you need to (for example, add a phone number or a dropdown).
  4. Publish your site so the form goes live. See How to publish.
Keep it short

The fewer fields you ask for, the more people will fill out your form. Name and email are often enough.

Where submissions go

Every submission goes to two places:

  • Your site's contact email. Set it by asking Kite: "Set the contact email for this site to hello@northstar.com and ops@northstar.com." More than one address is allowed. If none is set, notifications go to the site owner's login email. Notifications come from notifications@kite.space, so no email setup is needed on your side.
  • Leads. Choose Growth in the main left-hand menu, then Leads. Use Show leads from to pick one site or All sites. From a site, you can also open Insights, find the Leads from this site card, and click Open in Growth. On the Free plan you see the total number of leads and still get every lead by email. Paid plans see each submission and can follow up from there.

Test your form

  1. Open your live site and submit the form with real-looking details.
  2. Confirm you see a success message on the page.
  3. Check Leads in Growth, then the contact email (look in spam if it does not arrive).
Test from a different account

Send your test from an email address that is not the contact address, so you can clearly see it arrive.

Using a newsletter service

If you use a dedicated email marketing service, you can either let Kite's form collect addresses into Leads, or embed the service's own signup form as a script. See Chat Widgets & Custom Scripts. Kite can also send campaigns for you from your team's own address. See Content, outreach, and channels.

Troubleshooting

The form does not submit on the live site.

  1. Did you publish after adding or editing the form? See Changes not showing.
  2. Are required fields filled in, and is the email address well formed?
  3. Try a different browser to rule out an extension interfering.
  4. Ask Kite: "The contact form on the live site isn't submitting. Check it."

The form submits, but no email arrives. Check Leads in Growth first. If the submission is there, the form works. Then see Form emails aren't arriving.
